My first time trying Stinky Tofu pot (臭臭鍋) and ironically, it's in Los Angeles haha go figure! This Taiwanese-style shabu shabu franchise has gained the love of many, especially in SoCal, since it's opening. Their signature stinky tofu pot is filled with goodies that makes you yearning for more. From what I heard, the stinky tofu aroma used to be much more stronger, but since some customers started to complain, they have reduced the stinkiness. Actually, I personally prefer the stinkier the better! That's why it's called stinky tofu, right?
Anyways, what's actually inside this delicious/mouth-watering pot? Main ingredients include Fermented Tofu, Sliced Pork, Enoki Mushroom, Fish Cake, Meat Ball (Pork), Clam, Quail Egg, Wasabi Rice Ball, Pork Intestine, Preserved Vegetables, Tomato, Cilantro and for those who are allergic, unfortunately it contains peanuts. The other menu we tried was the Lamb pot, it contains similar ingredients, minus the sliced pork and fermented tofu and add some lamb.
The stinky tofu like I mentioned before, is not as strong as it used to be, but it is still good with that fermented taste. Some people might find it stinky, it's a distinct taste that you might have to grow into liking. This is the closest you can get to stinky tofu Taiwan-nightmarket style. For lunch time they even include one free choice of tea! Compare to their rival Uniboil I think Boiling Point has more fresh and special ingredients like the wasabi rice ball, quail eggs, pork intestines and the preserved vegetables.
Overall, I love it! Guess I'll be coming here more often! My goal is to try everything on their menu! I know they have a concept store in Pasadena that includes more organic choices and higher grade ingredients. For sure I will be making a visit soon.
