I was missing those delicious lamb skewers grilled on a charcoal stove right on my table from Korea, then suddenly found out they have them here in California too! Just my luck! Although I never visited a restaurant in China that had those kind of grills set up on the table, in Korea lamb skewers is known as a type of Chinese cuisine. In those so-called Chinese restaurants, not only do they sell lamb, they also sell Chinese beer like Tsing Dao and other type of Chinese food such as kung pao chicken or sweet and sour pork (but Korean-Chinese style of course). After some research, I found out there are actually quite a few places in Koreatown and Rowland Heights area. We chose "Wudi Kebob" which is very popular with the locals.
When I got inside, it was dark inside and they were playing loud kpop music. There was tons of ads of Korean soju and beer all over the wall. We were even given kimchi and pickled radish as side dishes like in Korean cuisine. If nobody told me, I would've thought this was a Korean restaurant. But the waiter who came to take our order spoke Chinese, so that gives it away (and the bad kimchi). We immediately decided on the mild beef and spicy lamb. I wished we would've chose the mild lamb as well because the chilli sauce on the spicy lamb was excessive and overpowering. The seasoning on the beef was much more delicious.
After we ordered, they put some charcoal in our grill and it was ready to go. I remember in Korea we would have to grill the meat ourselves and flip it to different sides by ourselves, but here they serve you! That's the nice thing about America I guess haha. At first, they would let the meat grill on the machine and it would automatically rotates the skewer like a kebab (hence the restaurant's name). Then later the waiter would come and cook it more thoroughly for you in a hasty manner so it is ready to be eaten faster.
They give you a separate plate with seasoning and it's delicious. Even if you feel the seasoning wasn't spicy enough, those extra herbs on the plates would satisfy you. Besides from the skewers I didn't try their other menu so I can't say much, but I know I will be coming back for more lamb skewers!
Tip: Do not get the spicy lamb! Get mild instead! You won't regret it.
